Bahia De Los Angeles Fishing Trip

My buddy invited me in July of 2022 to go on a fishing trip he always goes on in the summer. He asked me, but unfortunately, I could not go due to a recent surgery I had just undergone. But I still remember him telling me, "Tommy, let's go. It is going to be a trip of a lifetime. I promise it's one of the best trips you will experience. You will fish for big Yellowtail Amberjack, Mahi Mahi/Dorado, and whatever comes near your hook." After I told him I was unable to attend, he said he would invite me the next time, and so we continued our routine. My wife and I had planned to go to a wedding in August 2022, we did not end up going due to an unfortunate situation, but we still had our days off of work. My wife asked me, "We still have the days off; why don't you plan a badass fishing trip for yourself? I'll go with you, serves me to disconnect from all my devices." The first thing that came to mind was the trip my buddy had mentioned to me at Bahia De Los Angeles. I had already done some research and looked at Cangrejo's Sportfishing website, drive time, hospitality, and prices. We were supposed to go with another couple to the wedding, and I decided to reach out to them and ask if they still had the days off. They confirmed they had the days off, so I decided to invite them, and they confirmed. So the trip begins...

Things you need to know about Bahia De Los Angeles:

  • There is minimal to no reception (unless you have a military satellite phone)

  • You can only get there by vehicle or boat (a car would be more comfortable)

  • There are no ATMs there, so make sure you take cash there before departing on your trip (Dollars are exchanged probably 1 to 2 pesos less than the current exchange)

  • Bahia De Los Angeles is a fishing town; the best activities there are big fish and deep sea fishing.

  • Since you are getting there by land, I would recommend taking your gear so you can maximize your experience. (take Shabiki rigs, 16oz weights, big fish hooks, big reels and rods, heavy line, and trolling lures)

  • If you go fishing, you are fishing in Mexican Government protected waters. In other words, the fishing is good there.

  • Take plenty of snacks on a fishing trip (pack plenty of bottled water)

  • If you google or seek any fishing charters in this area, only two will show up. I have only done one, and it has gone really good with them on my three-day fishing trip (Cangrejo's Sportfishing)

  • Map the exact destination on the map before you leave your departure point and leave GPS on because you will cross a lot of deserts where there is no reception

  • Pump gas before heading into Mexico; if you are coming from a border state.

Overall, we had a great experience there. We were able to find a local restaurant to cook up our fresh catch of the day. We caught 17 massive Yellowtail Amberjack (by the way, are one of the best pound-for-pound fighting fish), one barred sand bass on our first day, 12 Mahi Mahi / Dorado on our second day, and one Sierra, one rockfish (we were trying groupers), and two Mahi Mahi / Dorado on our last day. The days were intense with fishing; the fish fought relentlessly and beat our butts. If you ever want to experience a great big fish and fishing experience, I would recommend putting Bahia De Los Angeles on your bucket list.

Lastly, you would ask, "Why is this place better than others?" That is the same question I asked myself. And after doing a thorough analysis as to why. Here are my observations and findings.

  • Bahia De Los Angeles is a hard place to get to (gives it a bit more exclusivity and keeps it more reserved)

  • You get to fish in protected waters

  • It is strictly for fishing (most of us our wives don't let us come by ourselves, so if there is nothing for wifey to do there. Well there is nothing there for the fellow married angler) "Happy wife, happy life"

Hope you all consider this trip. Reach out for any questions you may still have lingering. Enjoy and cheers.
